How to choose a sofa fabric that survives real life
The right sofa fabric balances three things: how it feels, how it looks after two years, and how much care you will honestly give it. Here is how we help clients choose.

When a sofa disappoints, the fabric is usually the culprit, not the frame, not the foam. The good news: choosing well is mostly about being honest about your household, then matching the fabric to it. This is the exact conversation we have in every sofa consultation.
Start with your household, not the swatch
Children, pets, daily use, sunlight through a west-facing window: each of these narrows the field more than any colour preference. A fabric that is perfect in a formal seating room can fail in eighteen months as the family movie couch.
- Daily family use: prioritise rub count (measured in Martindale cycles) above 25,000 and tight weaves.
- Pets: avoid loop weaves that claws can pull; look at performance flatweaves.
- Strong sunlight: choose solution-dyed fibres or accept gentle fading as patina.
- Formal, occasional use: linens and loose weaves are back on the table.
Natural, synthetic or blend?
Cotton and linen breathe beautifully and age with character, but they crease and absorb spills. Polyester and performance blends resist stains and abrasion but can feel flatter. Most of our clients land on blends: natural fibre feel with synthetic backbone.
A note on velvet
Modern performance velvets are far more forgiving than their reputation. They hide seaming beautifully and clean well, but they show sitting marks, and you should decide whether that bothers you before, not after.
Fixed covers or loose covers?
Loose covers can be removed and washed, the practical choice for homes with young children. Fixed upholstery looks more tailored and suits structured designs. On many of our sofas we do both: fixed on the body, loose on the cushions.

The two-year test
Before finalising, we ask clients to picture the sofa after two years of their actual life. If the honest picture includes turmeric, crayons or a golden retriever, we steer the palette and weave accordingly. A sofa you never worry about is a sofa you love longer.

For daily family use, look for 25,000 cycles or more. Fabrics above 40,000 are effectively contract-grade and shrug off almost anything a home can do to them.

Yes. Modern performance fabrics achieve stain resistance through fibre technology rather than harsh coatings, and reputable mills publish their certifications. Ask for the technical sheet, and we share it for every fabric in our library.
