Solid wood vs engineered wood: what actually matters

“Is it solid wood?” is the most common question we hear, and it is the wrong first question. The right one is: what does this part of the furniture need to do? Different jobs favour different materials, and honest furniture uses each where it wins.

Where solid wood wins

• Structural parts under stress: chair frames, table legs, bed rails.
• Surfaces that take impact and need re-finishing: dining table tops.
• Anything you want to sand, repair and hand down.

Solid wood moves with humidity. It always will. Good design accommodates that movement; bad design fights it and loses, which is where warped tops and stuck drawers come from.

Where engineered wood wins

• Tall, wide, flat panels: wardrobe doors and carcases stay flat where solid planks would cup.
• Humidity-prone rooms, where dimensional stability beats romance.
• Veneered surfaces that want dramatic, matched grain across a large face.

The honest hybrid

Most of our casework uses both: solid wood where hands and weight land, stable engineered cores with natural veneers where flatness matters. A wardrobe with solid-wood edges and veneered doors will outlast an all-solid one in a humid climate, and look calmer doing it.

Ask not “is it solid?” but “is the right material doing the right job?”
